Neutral Salt Spray Test Duration: How Many Hours Should You Test For?

"How many hours should I run the salt spray test for?" is one of the most common questions from teams new to corrosion testing — and the honest answer is that ASTM B117, ISO 9227 and JIS Z 2371 themselves don't mandate a duration. The test standards define how to run the test; the required exposure time comes from your product specification, customer requirement or internal quality standard.

Why the standards don't specify a duration

ASTM B117, ISO 9227 and JIS Z 2371 are method standards — they define chamber conditions, solution concentration, temperature and how the test should be run so results are repeatable across different labs and chambers. Pass/fail duration and acceptance criteria are deliberately left to the product specification, industry standard, or customer drawing that references the test, since the appropriate exposure time varies enormously by coating type, application environment and part criticality.

Commonly referenced duration benchmarks

While not fixed by the test method itself, certain exposure durations show up repeatedly across industry specifications as practical reference points:

  • 24–48 hours — often used for lighter coatings, quick production QC checks, or preliminary screening before committing to a longer test.
  • 96 hours — a very commonly referenced benchmark for standard zinc plating and general industrial hardware corrosion resistance.
  • 168 hours (1 week) — used for higher-durability coating requirements or automotive components exposed to harsher environments.
  • 240–500 hours — common for premium coatings, powder coating systems, and export products where longer service life claims are being validated.
  • 500–1000+ hours — typically reserved for high-durability or safety-critical components, marine-grade coatings, or specific OEM specifications demanding extended corrosion resistance evidence.

Where to find the correct duration for your product

Work through these sources in order before defaulting to a generic benchmark:

  • Check the product drawing or customer purchase order for an explicit callout (e.g. "96 hrs salt spray per ASTM B117, no red rust").
  • Check your company's internal quality manual or approved test plan if one exists for the product category.
  • If exporting, check whether the destination market or OEM has its own standard duration expectation — this can differ from your domestic default.
  • If no duration is specified anywhere and you're setting a QC baseline for a new product, start with a commonly used reference point for similar coatings (many hardware and plated components use 96 or 168 hours as a working default) and adjust based on observed results and any customer feedback.

Longer isn't automatically better

Running a test far longer than your specification requires doesn't make results "more thorough" in a useful way — it mainly consumes chamber time and delays turnaround without adding decision-relevant information, unless you're specifically validating an extended service-life claim. Match the test duration to what the specification actually requires, and use interim inspections (at 24-hour intervals, for instance) if you want early visibility into how a coating is trending before the full duration completes.

Chamber capacity for longer test cycles

If your product line regularly requires longer exposure tests (168+ hours), reliable automatic fog operation, auto fill/drainage and low-saline indication become more important than for short 24–48 hour tests, since the chamber needs to run unattended and consistently over multi-day cycles without manual topping up. This is a key reason labs running longer or higher-volume test programs typically move from Basic models to ASTM B117 / ISO 9227 automated or touch screen chamber ranges.
