Salt Spray Chamber Installation Requirements: A Site Readiness Guide

Getting a salt spray chamber up and running smoothly depends as much on site readiness as on the chamber itself. Labs that prepare power, ventilation, water and floor space in advance avoid installation delays and get the chamber into productive use faster.

Power supply

Most commercial salt spray chambers, including UMA Industries' Basic, ASTM B117/ISO 9227 and Touch Screen ranges, run on a standard 220 VAC single-phase power supply. Confirm your outlet's voltage stability and dedicated circuit capacity against the specific model's rating before installation — a stable supply matters for consistent temperature control over long test cycles (some tests run 96 hours or more continuously).

Ventilation and exhaust

Salt fog needs to be safely managed even inside a closed chamber. The installation area should have adequate room ventilation so that fog released during loading/unloading or lid opening doesn't build up in an enclosed space, and larger chambers benefit from an exhaust arrangement to vent chamber air during operation. Avoid installing chambers in poorly ventilated storage rooms or spaces shared with sensitive electronic equipment, since airborne salt residue over time can affect nearby metal fixtures and equipment.

Water supply and solution preparation

You'll need a reliable source of distilled or deionised water for salt solution preparation — tap water with high mineral content causes scale buildup in the atomizer and piping over time. Set up a designated area near the chamber for solution mixing and storage, separate from finished-sample handling, to avoid cross-contamination.

Drainage

Chambers need to be drained after each test cycle, and larger chambers benefit from a proper drainage line rather than manual bucket emptying. Plan for a drain point or waste collection system near the installation location, and check local requirements for saline wastewater disposal — don't route concentrated salt solution drainage into systems not designed for it.

Floor space and clearance

Beyond the chamber's own footprint, allow clearance on at least one side for loading/unloading samples and periodic tank refilling, plus overhead clearance if the chamber lid opens upward. Larger industrial-capacity chambers need proportionally more clearance — check the model's overall size (not just internal chamber size) against your available floor space before finalising the installation location.

A simple pre-arrival checklist

Before the chamber arrives, confirm the following at the installation site:

  • Confirm power point matches the chamber's voltage and current rating.
  • Identify a source of distilled/deionised water near the installation site.
  • Arrange a drain point or waste collection method for used salt solution.
  • Measure floor space including clearance for loading, lid opening and tank access.
  • Check room ventilation is adequate for occasional fog exposure during operation.
