Salt Spray Chamber vs Humidity Chamber: What's the Difference?

Salt spray chambers and humidity chambers are both environmental test equipment used in quality control, and they're sometimes confused because both involve a controlled, moist test environment. But they test for fundamentally different failure modes and are rarely interchangeable for the same test requirement.

What a salt spray chamber tests

A salt spray (salt fog) chamber tests corrosion resistance specifically. It atomises a 5% sodium chloride solution into a closed chamber held at a controlled temperature, exposing samples to a continuous salt fog for a set duration under ASTM B117, ISO 9227 or JIS Z 2371. The result tells you how well a coating, plating or metal surface resists corrosive attack — measured as time to red rust, white rust or coating failure.

What a humidity chamber tests

A humidity chamber (sometimes combined with temperature control as a temperature-humidity chamber) tests how a product performs under controlled moisture and temperature conditions — without salt. It's used to evaluate condensation resistance, material expansion/contraction, electronic component reliability, packaging integrity and general environmental durability under humid conditions, often following standards like IEC 60068 or product-specific humidity cycling profiles.

Unlike a salt spray chamber, a humidity chamber isn't primarily a corrosion test — it's a broader environmental stress test, and corrosion (if any occurs) is usually a secondary observation rather than the main measured outcome.

Key differences at a glance

The two chambers are built for different test media and measure different things entirely:

  • Test medium: salt spray chamber uses atomised saline solution; humidity chamber uses controlled water vapour, no salt.
  • Primary purpose: salt spray chamber measures corrosion resistance; humidity chamber measures general environmental/material response to moisture.
  • Typical standards: salt spray follows ASTM B117 / ISO 9227 / JIS Z 2371; humidity testing follows IEC 60068 or customer-defined humidity cycling.
  • Typical users: salt spray chambers are standard in metal finishing, electroplating, automotive and hardware QC; humidity chambers are common in electronics, packaging and materials testing.

Why some labs use both

A product that ships internationally or into demanding environments (automotive, outdoor electronics, marine equipment) may need to pass both corrosion resistance testing and general environmental durability testing, since they validate different failure risks. A coated automotive bracket, for example, might need salt spray testing for corrosion resistance and separately need humidity/thermal cycling if it also houses sensitive electronics.

Which one do you need?

If your customer specification, export requirement or quality manual calls out a corrosion resistance test, red rust rating, or references ASTM B117 / ISO 9227 / JIS Z 2371 by name, you need a salt spray chamber. If it calls out humidity cycling, condensation resistance or IEC 60068 environmental testing, that's a separate humidity chamber requirement. When in doubt, check the exact standard named on your product drawing or customer PO rather than guessing from the general test category.
